Alliance Urges Nigeria to Reject IMF Tax Proposals

The Alliance for Economic Recovery (AER) has called on the Nigerian government to reject the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) recommendations for additional taxes on fuel and telecommunications services. They warn that these measures could exacerbate poverty and hinder business operations, undermining ongoing efforts to stimulate economic recovery.

AER has proposed a seven-point reform agenda aimed at strengthening government finances and improving revenue generation to support economic growth without imposing new burdens on Nigerians. They argue that the country's immediate challenges stem from weak revenue administration and high production costs, rather than insufficient taxation.

Dr. Muda Yusuf, Chief Executive Officer of the Organized Private Sector Nigeria (OPSN), emphasized that the IMF's recommendations do not adequately reflect Nigeria's social realities, particularly the scale of poverty and food insecurity affecting millions.

The AER suggests focusing on improving tax administration and compliance, rationalizing tax expenditures, and reducing government costs to create fiscal space without increasing the tax burden.
