Analyst Predicts Approval of New States in Nigeria Amid Constitutional Restructuring

Nigerian political analyst Abdulrashe Hussain has highlighted the likelihood of one or more new states being approved in Nigeria following the successful scaling of seven bills to the second reading stage. The bills, sponsored by lawmakers from different regions, aim to create new administrative entities within existing states, potentially reshaping Nigeria's geopolitical landscape.

The proposed states include Ibadan State, Orlu State, Tiga State, Etiti State, Ok Ogun State, Ife Ijesa State, and Ijebu State. Hussain believes that the approval of these states would mark a significant step in Nigeria's constitutional restructuring process, addressing longstanding debates on representation, equity, and administrative efficiency across the country's diverse regions.

Notably, on October 26, 2025, a joint committee on constitutional review approved the creation of a new state in Nigeria's South East region after a two-day retreat in Lagos. The decision was part of the committee's review of 55 proposed state creations nationwide.
