Anambra Government Denies Obi's Claims on Debt and Fund

The Anambra State Government, through Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation Law Mefor, rejected claims made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, regarding the state's debt profile and an alleged N2.13 billion ecological fund purportedly left in a First Bank account at the end of Obi's tenure. Mefor accused Obi of making "wild and verifiably false claims" and stated that the state government has been servicing debts incurred under previous administrations.

He revealed that Obi's administration spent approximately $4.05 billion during his eight years in office, leaving eight external loans with an outstanding balance of $92.35 million as of June 30, 2026. Mefor also disputed Obi's assertion that he cleared inherited salary, pension, and gratuity arrears, stating that the current government has paid about N22 billion in gratuity arrears while some obligations from Obi's administration remain unsettled.

Regarding the ecological fund, Mefor clarified that the account in question was an Internally Generated Revenue Consolidated Revenue Account, which has never held the alleged amount.
