APC Reaffirms Tinubu's Push to Fix Nigeria's Electricity Crisis

President Tinubu's campaign council says reforms are underway to end estimated billing and improve power supply, citing legislative action since May 2023.
President Bola Tinubu's pledge to stabilise Nigeria's electricity sector and eliminate estimated billing practices remains a focus of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council. Dele Alake, the council's spokesperson and Minister of Solid Minerals, issued a statement on November 1 in response to public questions about progress on this 2023 campaign commitment.
During pre-election discussions with Lagos business leaders in 2023, Tinubu promised to deliver reliable power supply and stop customers from paying for estimated consumption rather than actual usage. The council views this as an ongoing endeavour rather than a completed task, acknowledging that Nigeria's electricity infrastructure confronts deep structural, commercial, and financial hurdles demanding sustained effort.
Multiple reforms and legislative actions have been initiated by the administration since May 2023, the council reported. The Electricity Act of 2023 was signed, which the council noted opens doors for state governments to engage in power generation and distribution activities.
Alake recommended that citizens assess the electricity pledge within its full scope, recalling that Tinubu previously committed to providing explanations for any delivery gaps should he run for another term. Public scrutiny of the electricity sector has intensified as the issue persists as a severe challenge affecting Nigerian households and businesses.
The APC highlighted progress in legislative areas and structural overhauls, though details regarding measurable results or specific timelines for achieving the objectives of phasing out estimated billing or dramatically boosting supply across the country remain absent from the statement.
