APGA Claims Complete Victory in Anambra Local Government Elections

On August 29, 2026, voters in Anambra State participated in local government elections that resulted in a comprehensive victory for the All Progressives Grand Alliance. Every chairmanship seat and councillorship position went to APGA candidates, as revealed by Genevieve Osakwe during a Sunday press conference held at ANSIEC headquarters in Awka on August 30.

The electoral commission confirmed that APGA's sweep encompassed all 21 local government areas throughout the state. Party nominees won every chairmanship position, and similarly dominated the councillorship races that had been tallied at ward level.

Opposition participation proved limited, with only the Young Progressives Party fielding nominees—and only within Anambra East LGA. In that particular contest, APGA accumulated 50,169 votes against YPP's 1,658 votes.

Osakwe described the voting exercise as orderly and impartial, noting that the commission had meticulously collated and scrutinised data gathered from all polling locations before announcing victors. Results encompassed tallies from 362 electoral wards distributed across the 21 local government areas.

This outcome reinforces APGA's long-standing grip on Anambra's political landscape, having consistently held both state-level executive authority and local administrative control. The party's organisational capacity within the state remains evident, though the dearth of genuine electoral contests across most jurisdictions meant that residents had limited options when selecting their local representatives.
