Nigeria's Social Cohesion Index Reaches 48.8% in 2023

The Africa Poll Institute (API) announced that Nigeria's social cohesion index (NSCI) has increased to 48.8%, marking the highest score recorded since the survey's inception in 2019. This represents a 2 percentage point improvement from the previous year, although it remains below the critical threshold of 50.

The findings reveal that a significant number of Nigerians are increasingly identifying as Nigerian rather than by ethnic or religious affiliations, with 46% of respondents expressing pride in their national identity and 44% identifying proudly with their ethnic group. The report was presented during a keynote address titled "Bleed Red" by Rev.

Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, who emphasized the importance of social cohesion for societal development and the need for unity in facing common challenges.
