Aston Villa Faces Criticism Over Visit Rwanda Deal

Aston Villa has entered a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda, reportedly valued between £20 million and £26 million per year. This deal has attracted criticism from Amnesty International, which argues that the partnership could contribute to "sportswashing" efforts by the Rwandan government to improve its international image despite its poor human rights record.

Felix Jakens, head of campaigns at Amnesty International UK, stated that the sponsorship could help Rwanda deflect attention from its human rights issues. The Rwandan government has consistently denied allegations of supporting rebel groups in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Aston Villa is looking to replace its previous sponsorship with Betano, which ended last season, and joins other clubs like Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in partnering with Visit Rwanda.
