Mama Nike Celebrates 75 Years of Cultural Diplomacy

Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, a prominent figure in the Nigerian art scene, celebrated her 75th birthday on May 23, 2023. The celebration included an event in Atlanta, organized by the Fulton County Art and Culture Commission and Georgia State University, which commenced on May 15, with pre-event activities starting on May 6.

The event featured 13 Nigerian artists, including Shaye Awoyomi and Lasaki Olubunmi, and focused on cultural diplomacy and the connection of African heritage through art. Mama Nike, as she is affectionately known, has been a significant cultural ambassador, advocating for Nigerian art on global platforms.

The initiative aimed to reconnect the African diaspora and address the historical neglect of Nigerian visual art. Mama Nike's journey began in Ogidi Ijumu, where she learned traditional weaving and indigo dyeing from her family, and she has since become a matriarch of the Nigerian art community, fostering cultural exchanges and collaborations.
