Atiku Rejects 30-Day Fuel Discount as Election-Year Window Dressing
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed the Federal Government's month-long petrol discount, demanding permanent solutions to Nigeria's fuel crisis…
Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, has rejected the Federal Government's announcement of a 30-day fuel discount at NNPC Limited stations. In a statement released Thursday through his campaign's Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that the temporary measure fails to address the root causes of Nigeria's persistent fuel price surge and cost-of-living emergency.
Atiku characterized the discount initiative as a short-term political gesture timed to coincide with the electoral calendar rather than a genuine attempt to relieve ordinary Nigerians. He accused the Tinubu administration of standing idle while citizens bore the weight of elevated fuel costs before introducing what he described as a calendar-bound intervention.
According to Atiku's position, the government's approach is inadequate and does not constitute meaningful assistance for households and businesses crippled by transport and food price inflation. The discount programme, announced as an interim relief measure by the Federal Government, prioritizes public transporters at NNPC filling stations.
However, Atiku's critique centers on the absence of structural reforms that would deliver sustained price relief. His statement emphasized that Nigerians require permanent solutions anchored in policy reform, not temporary windows of reduced pump prices.
The exchange reflects growing political tension over how best to manage Nigeria's fuel sector challenges. While the government has framed the discount as an immediate cushion against elevated costs, Atiku's rejection signals that opposition voices view such measures as insufficient responses to the economic hardships that have defined recent months.
The discount programme's 30-day window remains the central point of contention between the administration and its critics.
