AU Supports New Sudanese Dialogue Initiative for Peace

The African Union Commission has welcomed the launch of a new initiative designed to facilitate a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue aimed at ending the armed conflict in Sudan. In a statement released on Monday, the Commission noted that since the outbreak of the Sudanese crisis in April 2023, its leadership has worked to bridge divisions among Sudanese stakeholders and foster conditions for peace through dialogue.

The initiative will be supervised by an independent committee of Sudanese elders and aims to include all civil, political, and societal stakeholders to ensure a broad consultation process. The Commission stressed that the success of this political process relies on inclusivity and local ownership.

The ultimate goal is to achieve a united, sovereign, and peaceful Sudan governed by legitimate civilian institutions and supported by a unified national security architecture. This initiative aligns with existing African Union efforts and the Quintet Mechanism's strategy to resolve the Sudanese crisis.
