Abuja Council Chairmen Fail to Address N100 Billion Audit Issues

The chairmen of the six Area Councils of Abuja have once again failed to appear before the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives to respond to questions regarding alleged financial infractions amounting to approximately N100 billion. In response, the committee has issued a seven-day "final" summons to the Directors of Personnel Management and Finance, as well as the Heads of Audit from the six councils, requiring their appearance on October 14, 2026, or they will face sanctions as per relevant service rules.
The councils involved are Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali. The audit queries stem from the Annual Audit Report of the Auditor-General for the Six FCT Area Councils for the year ending December 31, 2021, revealing outstanding liabilities of about N7.65 billion due to unremitted pension deductions, PAYE, VAT, withholding tax, and unpaid contractor obligations.
AMAC has the highest liability at N2.19 billion, followed by Bwari at N1.49 billion and Kwali at N1.46 billion.
