Augustine Eguavoen Slams FG Over Lack of Support for Late Peter Rufai’s Family

Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen criticized the Federal Government for not providing enough support to the family of late legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai. Rufai passed away on July 3 after a prolonged illness and cardiac arrest.

Eguavoen expressed his disappointment at the lack of assistance towards the Rufai family during this difficult time. The former teammate and Nigerian football dignitaries attended Rufai's burial on August 22, 2025.

Eguavoen's emotional outburst highlighted the need for better support from the government for the families of former football stars. Fans on social media also criticized the lack of support, emphasizing the responsibility of the government to care for these individuals who have contributed to the country's sports legacy.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) confirmed offering financial support to Rufai's family for the final rites.
