Austrian Man Sentenced for Foiled Terror Plot at Concert

On August 7, 2024, Beran, a 21-year-old man, was arrested for plotting a terrorist attack during Taylor Swift's concert as part of her Era Tour at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of terrorism offenses and membership in a terrorist organization.

Prosecutors stated that Beran intended to use explosives, knives, and vehicles to target approximately 30,000 fans outside the stadium, which has a capacity of 65,000. His arrest occurred just days before the concert, prompting the cancellation of three scheduled shows in Vienna.

Although he faced a potential 20-year sentence, the court ultimately imposed a 15-year term. Beran's defense attorney, Anna Mair, reported that he expressed deep remorse and regret for his actions, calling it the biggest mistake of his life.

Prosecutors also alleged Beran's involvement in a separate attack plot targeting Turkey, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, although he denied specific charges related to that case.
