Nigerian Boxer Ernest Akushey Dies Chasing Prize Money After Fight Loss

Nigerian boxer Ernest Akushey, known for his unbeaten record in the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions, tragically passed away after a fight against Jacob Dickson at Bukom Boxing Arena. Akushey suffered a technical knockout in the match, leading to his demise 11 days later.

The viral video of the fight revealed the intense pain Akushey endured. Following his death, it was disclosed that Akushey was set to receive GHS20,000 for the bout.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) announced an immediate suspension of boxing activities in Ghana to prioritize athlete safety and investigate the circumstances surrounding Akushey's death. The NSA will appoint a committee to oversee the sport's management and implement safety recommendations.

Boxing legend Georg Foreman also expressed his condolences, highlighting Akushey's promising career and the risks associated with the sport.
