AIHN Reports N1.65 Trillion Raised in Banking Recapitalisation

Kemi Awodein, president of the Association of Issuing Houses of Nigeria (AIHN), stated that the banking sector's recapitalisation has facilitated new capital-raising avenues and strengthened the capital market's role in long-term funding for economic development. At the AIHN's 2026 Annual General Meeting in Lagos, she noted that market capitalisation neared N95 trillion by the end of 2025.
The recapitalisation, initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria, led to N1.65 trillion raised, with domestic investors contributing 71%. By November 2025, 27 banks had engaged in capital-raising, with 33 of 37 banks compliant with new capital requirements.
The revised mandates set minimum capital at N500 billion for international banks, N200 billion for national banks, and N50 billion for regional banks. Awodein also highlighted the introduction of the Investments and Securities Act 2025, aimed at enhancing investor protection and market integrity.
The AIHN reported a total income increase to N193.3 million in 2025, with total funds and liabilities rising to N613.3 million.
