Ahmad Urges INEC to Change 2027 Election Dates

Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential aide, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the announced timetable for the 2027 general elections. The elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, for the presidential and national assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for the governorship and state assembly polls.

Ahmad expressed concern that these dates fall within the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a period when Muslims dedicate time to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection. He warned that conducting elections during this time could pose challenges to voter participation, particularly for those observing the fast.

Ahmad emphasized the importance of ensuring full inclusivity in the electoral process and urged INEC to reconsider the dates to promote broader participation and convenience for citizens, highlighting the need for national cohesion.
