Bayelsa's Governor Diri Launches Cancer Centre Initiative

On September 25, 2026, Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, inaugurated an 18-member steering committee for the establishment of the Bayelsa Cancer Treatment and Research Centre at Government House in Yenagoa. Represented by his deputy, Dr Peter Akpe, Diri condemned the neglect of communities that contribute to the nation's wealth but lack adequate healthcare.

He highlighted that cancer, particularly breast, cervical, and prostate cancers, has become prevalent in the state, often diagnosed too late due to inaccessible and expensive treatment options. Diri referenced the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission Report of 2023, which raised concerns about the health consequences of oil pollution.

He tasked the committee, chaired by Prof Seiyefa Brisibe, to assess the cancer burden, recommend a suitable location for the center, and plan for necessary infrastructure and manpower. Brisibe expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to establishing a world-class cancer center, underscoring the administration's commitment to public health.
