Nigeria's Roadmap to Electric Vehicle Revolution by 2060

A new white paper from the Rocky Mountain Institute outlines Nigeria's potential to spearhead the electric vehicle (EV) revolution by 2060 through the establishment of a decentralized solar-powered charging infrastructure. Currently, Nigeria's energy grid delivers approximately 5GW against a demand of 30GW, necessitating innovative solutions.

The paper suggests that instead of waiting for a perfect national grid, Nigeria can leverage solar energy to create independent charging hubs and battery swap stations, allowing electric motorcycle riders to exchange depleted batteries in two minutes. The model draws comparisons with successful implementations in Kenya and Morocco, emphasizing the need for supportive policies to attract private investment.

By 2040, the transition to electric transit could reduce Nigeria's fuel import bill by 30%. The upcoming Nigeria EV Expo, scheduled for September 24-26, 2026, in Lagos, will further discuss these strategies and the roadmap for electrifying transportation.
