Presidency Defends Nigeria's Borrowing Amid Obi's Critique

The Nigerian presidency has issued a rebuttal to comments made by former presidential candidate Peter Obi regarding the country's borrowing practices under President Bola Tinubu's administration. Obi criticized the rising public debt and likened borrowing to a "leprosy killer cancer," suggesting that it is not being managed properly.

In response, Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, defended the government's borrowing strategy, stating that every sovereign nation takes loans and that Nigeria's borrowing should be viewed as a sign of trustworthiness. Onanuga emphasized the need for the government to ensure that borrowing benefits the Nigerian people rather than merely justifying the debt.

He highlighted that the Tinubu administration is committed to managing the country's debt responsibly and effectively.
