Botswana's President Boko Targets Citrus Exports to China

Botswana is initiating an expansion of its citrus exports to China, as announced by President Boko ahead of his first state visit to China since taking office. This initiative follows China's implementation of zero-tariff treatment for all 53 African countries with diplomatic relations from 1 May.
This measure allows qualifying African exports to access the Chinese market duty-free, which encompasses approximately 1.4 billion consumers. President Boko expressed optimism about the potential for strengthening trade ties between China and Africa.
He emphasized that agriculture is a key sector that could benefit from enhanced economic relations with China. In addition to citrus exports, Botswana aims to foster trade and industrial cooperation with Chinese companies, particularly in mineral beneficiation and manufacturing, to reduce its economic dependence on diamond exports.
Boko noted that partnerships with Chinese firms, which have invested in research and development, could assist Botswana in developing value-added industries and improving its international market capabilities.
