Nigeria Introduces Duty-Free Threshold for Small Imports

The Nigerian government has approved a duty-free threshold for small imports, allowing travelers and online shoppers to import goods valued at $300 or less without paying customs duties. The new de minimis threshold, effective from September 8, 2025, permits immediate clearance of small imports, express shipments, and passenger baggage without custom charges.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board's decision aims to streamline import processes and boost online shopping by exempting up to four importations per person annually. However, the NCS warns against splitting orders or falsifying invoices to evade duties, with penalties under the NCS Act 2023.

The move is expected to facilitate trade and enhance the ease of doing business in Nigeria.
