Reps Amend Electoral Act 2026: Jail Term for Dual Membership

On Wednesday, during a plenary session, the House of Representatives approved an amendment to the Electoral Act 2026 that criminalizes dual party membership in Nigeria. The new provision stipulates that individuals found guilty of belonging to more than one political party at the same time will face a fine of ₦10 million.

Additionally, the law prescribes a maximum prison term of two years for any individual convicted under this provision. This amendment is part of the lawmakers' efforts to strengthen Nigeria's electoral framework and address issues related to political party defection, which has been a significant irregularity in the country's political system.

The changes aim to promote discipline within Nigeria's multi-party democratic system and tighten regulations governing political party affiliations.
