Tinubu Orders Investigation into Meta, Google, and X

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to conduct an investigation into major technology companies, specifically targeting Meta, Alphabet Inc. (the parent company of Google), and X (formerly known as Twitter). This directive follows a joint petition submitted by the Nigerian Press Organization, which raised concerns about the activities of these digital platforms operating in Nigeria.

The FCCPC's Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaj Ijagwu, disclosed that the investigation will focus on allegations against these firms, including their engagement in anti-competitive practices and unlawful exploitation of new content produced by Nigerian media organizations. The investigation aims to determine whether the actions of these technology companies and AI platforms violate Nigeria's competition and consumer protection laws and to assess the impact on the country's media industry.
