Bridging Local Innovation with Global Standards: SafePlay Meets the World

The Lagos State Lotteries Gaming Authority (LSLGA) has launched SafePlay, a digital tool aimed at helping punters manage their gambling behavior to address the growing concern of gambling addiction. Unveiled on August 6, 2025, in Ikeja, Nigeria, SafePlay is the first unified solution in the country designed to reduce harm by allowing gamblers to opt-out of betting activities for defined periods across licensed operators.

Developed and managed by Safegaming Technologies, SafePlay puts the punter first, according to LSLGA CEO Bashir. The tool allows individuals to voluntarily exclude themselves from licensed gaming platforms for periods ranging from a month to a permanent ban.

SafePlay covers licensed online gambling, including casino and sportsbooks, and its unique positioning aligns closely with international best practices, such as Sweden's Spelpaus. The tool's scalability and potential for growth in Nigeria and beyond have been highlighted, with calls for expansion to cover retail betting and lottery operations.
