Burnham Supports Man City Owners Amid Financial Verdict

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister Mayor of Greater Manchester, defended the owners of Manchester City, the City Football Group, after an independent commission found the club guilty of the majority of 115 charges brought by the Premier League regarding financial rule breaches. Burnham expressed concern that the owners might sell the club, emphasizing their significant investment in Manchester since Sheikh Mansour's takeover in 2008.

The commission's findings included allegations of "sham contracts" and over £830 million in undisclosed funding, with the Premier League stating that the club had "systematically broken" its rules over nearly a decade. Manchester City is expected to appeal the findings by October 2.

Possible sanctions could include fines, points deductions, or expulsion from the Premier League. Burnham noted that the case raises serious issues regarding the owners' license to operate the club.

He also referenced Everton's previous financial rule breaches and cautioned against rushing to judgment regarding Manchester City's situation.
