CAF Implements Referee and VAR Reforms Post-AFCON 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced major reforms in refereeing and VAR operations in response to the controversies surrounding the AFCON 2025 final. This decision was made to rebuild trust in the officiating of African football.

The reforms were detailed in a statement released on Sunday, March 29, and are designed to prevent future incidents that could overshadow tournaments. CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized the need for an overhaul following extensive legal consultations with African football experts.

The organization confirmed that it will continue to appoint leading African judges to its disciplinary and appeal boards. The focus of CAF will remain on ongoing competitions, including the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Champions League, as well as preparations for national teams participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States.
