Canada claim historic first World Cup point in 1-1 draw with Bosnia

Co-hosts Canada secured their maiden World Cup point after drawing level with Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening match on home soil.

Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina played to a 1-1 stalemate in the co-hosts' opening fixture of the 2026 World Cup. The result marks a milestone for the Canadian squad, which had never collected a point in the tournament's history across their two prior appearances in 1986 and 2022, both of which ended in six losses combined.

Bosnia took the lead through Jovo Lukic in the 21st minute, converting from a corner kick setup. Lukic's header found the back of the net as the European side capitalised on a set-piece delivery.

Canada pressed forward but squandered chances in the first half, with forward Jonathan David failing to capitalise on a clear opportunity in the 17th minute when goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj saved his shot. The co-hosts levelled through Cyle Larin in the second half.

Larin's finish marked Canada's equaliser and his 31st goal in national team colours. The goal sparked celebrations in the Toronto stadium and prevented the host nation from falling to defeat at home.

Canada continued to attack thereafter, though they could not find a winning goal despite sustained pressure in the final stages. The result gives Canada a point to build on as they navigate their opening World Cup campaign.

The squad, managed by Jesse Marsch, demonstrated attacking intent throughout but was unable to overcome a resilient Bosnian defence. Canada's next fixture is against Qatar in the group stage.
