Canada Targets 7 Key Professions for Immigration in 2026

On August 27, 2026, Canada announced the professional categories it is targeting through its Express Entry immigration system to address ongoing labor shortages. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) indicated a need for experienced workers in high-demand fields.

The prioritized occupations include doctors, researchers, senior managers with Canadian work experience, healthcare and social services professionals, skilled tradespeople, educators, and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Additionally, transport professionals are also sought after.

Candidates who speak French are given special consideration to support francophone communities outside Quebec. The Express Entry system is a points-based immigration management system that ranks candidates based on age, work experience, and language ability, issuing invitations to apply to those with the highest scores.
