Cardiff City Loses £100m Sala Compensation Case

Cardiff City lost its legal bid for £100 million in compensation in a French court concerning the death of Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash on January 21, 2019. Sala, an Argentine forward, was traveling to complete a transfer from FC Nantes to Cardiff City, which had agreed to a £15 million transfer fee just two days prior to the crash.

Cardiff sought £120 million in damages, arguing that Sala's arrival was crucial for the club to remain in the Premier League and avoid significant financial losses. The court rejected Cardiff's claim and ordered the club to pay approximately £400,000 in legal fees and moral damages to FC Nantes, which are payable immediately regardless of any appeal.

Cardiff has one month to decide whether to challenge the ruling, with the potential for a full retrial if they proceed. The club's representative, Cline Jones, and Sala's mother, Merced Taffarel, attended the hearing, while Nantes' lawyers, J.R.

Marsaudon and Louis Mari Absil, welcomed the verdict.
