CBN to Introduce New Policies for Improved Cash Access in Nigeria

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to implement new regulatory policies to enhance cash access by addressing issues with debit card issuance and ATM operations in Nigerian banks. The move, announced by CBN committee head Yemi Cardoso and special advisor Fatai Karim, aims to reduce ATM congestion, minimize downtime, and ensure equitable cash distribution across the country.

The initiative seeks to combat recurrent ATM failures, cash shortages, and restore public confidence in electronic payment channels. Stakeholder engagements are ongoing to finalize the framework, with the regulations expected to take effect by the end of the second quarter of 2026.
