CBN Warns Nigerians of Rising Cyber Fraud Threats

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised an alarm regarding a significant increase in cyber fraud, particularly through deceptive emails and online communications aimed at stealing personal financial information. In a statement released on Wednesday, the bank's Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, noted that these fraudulent messages are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often disguising themselves as official correspondence from the apex bank.

The CBN explained that these communications are designed to harvest sensitive data and spread false information about the bank's leadership and policies. The bank warned that responding to such messages could lead to compromised accounts and significant financial losses.

Cybersecurity expert Ibrahim Adeyemi emphasized that fraudsters are leveraging social engineering tactics to manipulate victims, crafting messages that appear credible and sometimes mimicking official logos and language to create urgency. Financial expert Ngozi Okafor highlighted the importance of public awareness and noted that digital literacy is key in defending against cyber fraud, as many people underestimate the ease with which their data can be compromised.
