CBN Reports $6.3 Billion in Foreign Portfolio Inflows

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced that net foreign portfolio investment inflows reached $6.3 billion between January and August 2026, significantly bolstering the country's foreign exchange position. Deputy Governor Muhammad Sani Abdullahi disclosed this information during the 38th Seminar for Finance Correspondents and Business Editors in Abuja.
He noted that the increase in foreign exchange supply has led to greater market stability and reduced the CBN's dependence on direct interventions. In July 2026, total flows amounted to $10.8 billion, with $7.3 billion, or nearly 68 percent, originating from autonomous sources.
Additionally, diaspora remittances contributed approximately $950 million in July, further enhancing dollar liquidity. As of September 11, 2026, Nigeria's gross external reserves stood at $55.6 billion, a significant improvement from below $900 million in 2023.
The narrowing gap between official and parallel market exchange rates, now below 2.2 percent, reflects the positive impact of reforms by the CBN.
