CBN Injects N5.21trn Ahead of N700bn Treasury Bills Auction
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) injected a net N5.21 trillion into the banking system within one week, preparing for a N700 billion Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTB) auction scheduled for Wednesday. This liquidity injection was largely driven by maturities and repayments from Open Market Operations (OMO) and primary market instruments.
The largest single-day release occurred on August 11, when the CBN repaid N2.48 trillion through OMO transactions, accounting for approximately 47.6% of the total liquidity returned to banks. Additionally, the CBN executed N2.73 trillion in Primary Market Repayments, with N2.45 trillion on August 4 and N283.78 billion on August 6.
The CBN's return to the domestic debt market follows the cancellation of a similar-sized offer on August 5, which was due to aggressive liquidity mop-ups on August 3 and 4 that absorbed about N4.69 trillion from the financial system. Investment analyst Bukunmi Gbolagunte noted that the timing of the liquidity injection is significant, as banks receive substantial cash just before the auction, potentially leading to a heavily oversubscribed auction.
