Nigeria's Power Minister Tegbe Promotes China Partnership

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, stated that deeper cooperation with China in the power sector will provide reliable electricity, renewable energy, and locally manufactured power equipment to Nigerians. Speaking at a reception in Abuja on the 77th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Tegbe emphasized that the benefits of Chinese investment would be maximized by developing Nigerian technical capacity and strengthening local enterprises.

He highlighted the diplomatic relationship established on February 10, 1971, which was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership by President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping in September 2024. Tegbe acknowledged China's contributions to major projects like the Lekki Deep Seaport and Zungeru Hydropower Station, and noted that bilateral trade reached $28 billion at the end of the previous year, with $17 billion recorded in the first half of 2026.

He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the one-China principle, recognizing the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China.
