China's July Retail Sales and Factory Activity Slow

In July, China's retail sales and factory activity showed slower growth, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released on Monday. Retail sales grew by 0.6%, falling short of the 1.5% forecast and down from a 1% increase in June.
Industrial production growth also slowed to 4.5% year-on-year, down from 5.3% in June and below the 5% forecast. NBS spokesman Fu Linghui attributed these challenges to ongoing international geopolitical conflicts and severe weather in some regions.
Additionally, fixed-asset investment from January to July fell by 6.7% year-on-year. Zhiwei Zhang, President and Chief Economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, indicated that the weak economic data suggests further downside risks that necessitate more effective policy responses.
The Chinese government is targeting a national growth rate of 4.5-5.0% for the year, the lowest official goal in decades, but the economy did not meet this target in the second quarter.
