Chinese Ambassador Praises Tinubu's Reforms, Trade Surges

On September 24, 2026, during a reception in Abuja marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms. He stated that these reforms have supported Nigeria’s economic recovery and fostered deeper cooperation between Nigeria and China.

Yu reported that bilateral trade reached $18 billion in the first half of the year, a 35% increase, with Chinese imports from Nigeria rising by 81%. He expressed China's readiness to align its 15th Five-Year Plan with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on industrialization, the digital economy, and green and blue economies.

Yu invited Nigeria to join the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation to enhance technological collaboration. Joseph Tegbe, Director-General of the Nigeria-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Minister of Power, acknowledged China's contributions to major projects in Nigeria, reflecting on the 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
