NDC Leader Warns Tinubu Against Undermining Democracy

Seriake Dickson, the National Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former governor of Bayelsa, cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Speaking at the Diplomatic Digest 6th Anniversary Lecture, Dickson stated that there is little distinction between a civilian and military dictator when constitutional safeguards are weakened.

He stressed the importance of upholding the Constitution, safeguarding judicial independence, preserving press freedom, and ensuring the independence of the electoral body. Dickson noted that democracy requires a commitment to governance, rule of law, and an impartial judiciary.

He expressed concern over threats to democratic values in Africa, particularly within ECOWAS, and criticized the current administration's foreign policy, claiming it has weakened Nigeria's leadership role in the region. Dickson warned that governments perceived as oppressive would lose public trust and support, highlighting the dangers of political parties viewing themselves as above the nation and its institutions.
