Nigeria's NCCC seeks $337 billion for climate goals

At the inauguration of the National Steering Committee for the Implementation of Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 (NDC 3.0) in Abuja, Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), announced that Nigeria needs $337 billion to achieve its climate targets by 2035. The NDC 3.0 aims for a 32% reduction in emissions, aligning with Nigeria's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060.
Majekodunmi emphasized the importance of integrating climate action into national development to address issues such as flooding, extreme heat, and food insecurity, while also promoting energy access, public health, job creation, and resilience. The Interministerial Steering Committee will oversee the implementation, ensuring climate priorities are included in budgets and mobilizing finance.
She called on development partners, private investors, civil society, and government agencies to support the initiative through financing, technology transfer, and coordinated investments. UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Elsie Attafuah also stated that Nigeria's NDC 3.0 commitments should influence public budgets and infrastructure planning.
