Coalition Urges Decentralization of Pipeline Security Contracts

A coalition of youth bodies in Rivers State has called on the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to decentralize pipeline surveillance contracts in the Niger Delta region. In a statement signed by Mr. Charl Malford on behalf of the coalition, they expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for ongoing developmental efforts in the region.

The coalition emphasized that decentralizing pipeline security contracts is essential for creating job opportunities for the youth, who make up a significant portion of the region's population. They argued that awarding contracts to a single company is neither equitable nor sustainable, as it does not involve local communities directly in securing infrastructure.

The coalition believes that meaningful local engagement in pipeline security will reduce crime, drug abuse, and other social challenges. They also urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to clarify and unbundle existing contracts related to pipeline and wellhead surveillance to ensure clear roles and responsibilities.

The coalition reiterated its commitment to peace and development in the Niger Delta.
