NHRC Calls for State Police to Enhance Nigeria's Security

During a panel session at the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Port Harcourt, Dr. Anthony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), advocated for the establishment of State Police to improve Nigeria's security framework. He criticized the current centralized policing system for its inability to respond effectively to security threats, noting that Nigeria's large population is inadequately policed.

Ojukwu argued that State Police would enhance operational effectiveness by allowing officers to have better knowledge of local terrains and communities. He cautioned that the establishment of State Police must include strong human rights safeguards and accountability mechanisms to prevent political abuse.

Ojukwu urged lawmakers to ensure that any legislation for State Police includes provisions for accountability and independent oversight to prevent unlawful practices. He emphasized that security and human rights should coexist, as sustainable security relies on legality, professionalism, and respect for fundamental rights.
