Nigeria's Cooking Gas Prices Surge Despite Increased Supply

Cooking gas prices in Nigeria have risen to N2,000 per kilogram, despite a significant increase in domestic supply from local refineries and gas processing plants. Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) indicates that local LPG supply averaged between 3,300 and 4,500 tons daily from March to April 2026.

However, this increase has not translated into lower consumer prices, which have risen from around N1,000 per kilogram a month ago. The decline in imports, which fell to 200 tons daily in March 2026 from 1,600 tons in November 2025, has not alleviated the situation.

Stakeholders warn that unless distribution bottlenecks are addressed, the increase in local production will not sufficiently ease the burden of high cooking gas prices. The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers has raised alarms over the erratic supply and rising costs, which could worsen hardship for millions of Nigerians.
