Study Reveals Soaring Cost of Diabetes Drugs in Nigeria, Experts Call for Urgent Reforms

A recent study conducted by DGI Consult with support from Gatefield highlighted the significant increase in the cost of diabetes drugs in Nigeria, placing diabetes care out of reach for ordinary citizens. The study, shared during a webinar marking World Diabetes Day 2025, showed a 400% rise in the average cost of treating diabetes per person due to inflation rates.

Experts, including Professor Felicia Anumah and Bernard Enyia, emphasized the need for affordable medicine facilities and proposed multi-stakeholder funding mechanisms to reduce drug prices. Omei Bongo Ikwu stressed the importance of local drug manufacturing and tax incentives to lessen dependence on imports.
