ECOWAS Suspends Guinea-Bissau After Coup, Calls for Democratic Restoration

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Guinea-Bissau after a military coup, demanding the restoration of democratic governance. ECOWAS leaders, chaired by Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, called for the coup leaders to return to the barracks and ensure the safety of citizens.

The ECOWAS Security Council will monitor the situation and may impose sanctions if necessary. Faur Gnassingbe of Togo is appointed to lead a high-level mediation mission in Guinea-Bissau.
