Court Adjourns Tukur Mamu's Rights Suit Against AGF

Tukur Mamu's fundamental rights suit against the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) concerning his designation as a terrorist was adjourned by Justice Moham Umar to April 23, 2026. Mamu's counsel, Johnson Usman SAN, argued that the AGF's actions violated Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution, which presumes innocence until proven guilty.

The court was informed that the media and public had labeled Mamu a terrorist, which Usman contended infringed on Mamu's fundamental rights. The federal government had previously arraigned Mamu on terrorism-related charges, but Usman insisted that the AGF's designation was wrongful without a court conviction.

The AGF's representative, David Kasw, countered that the designation was lawful under the Terrorism Prevention Prohibition Act of 2022, which allows for such designations based on reasonable suspicion. Justice Umar inquired about the legality of the AGF's designation, and the matter was adjourned for further constitutional considerations.
