Fifth Death Reported in Cuba-U.S. Speedboat Shootout

The Cuban government reported a fifth death resulting from a shootout involving a U.S. speedboat and the Cuban Coast Guard, which occurred on February 25. The shootout began when the Cuban Coast Guard approached the vessel and demanded identification from the crew, who responded by opening fire.

In the ensuing confrontation, four individuals aboard the speedboat were killed. The speedboat, registered in the United States, was found to be carrying various firearms, including 14 rifles and 11 pistols, along with nearly 13,000 rounds of ammunition.

The Cuban Interior Ministry stated that they are investigating the incident in cooperation with U.S. authorities and have filed terrorism charges against a surviving crew member, identified as Roberto Alvarez Avila, who was wounded in the shootout. The U.S. government has expressed a desire for regime change in Cuba, which is seen as a destabilizing factor in the region.
