Nigeria's Currency Outside Banks Drops to N5.21 Trillion

As of February 2026, the amount of currency outside banks in Nigeria has decreased by 3.66% to N5.21 trillion, while the total currency in circulation remains unchanged at N5.73 trillion, according to the latest monetary credit statistics from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The decline in cash outside banks reflects moderate cash demand following year-end spending surges.

In December 2025, currency outside banks peaked at N5.41 trillion, driven by increased retail activity and higher withdrawals during the festive season. The trend shows a gradual accumulation of cash outside banks, which rose from N4.65 trillion in October 2025 to N4.91 trillion in November 2025.

The figures indicate a mixed trajectory throughout the second half of 2025, with cash outside banks fluctuating due to evolving economic conditions. The total currency in circulation has mirrored this pattern, remaining stable at N5.73 trillion, indicating a cyclical rhythm in cash demand influenced by seasonal consumption and economic activity.
