Nigeria Faces Rising Cyber Attacks on Critical Infrastructure

The Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (NGCERT) has issued a fresh nationwide cyber alert, warning of a sustained wave of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that increasingly threaten Nigeria's critical digital infrastructure across both public and private sectors. These attacks, which overwhelm servers and networks with massive volumes of malicious internet traffic, disrupt operations and undermine confidence in digital systems.

NGCERT noted that the latest attacks have become more complex and aggressive, employing multi-vector operations that blend volumetric floods and protocol-based attacks. Threat actors are exploiting known vulnerabilities in widely used software systems, including the Log4Shell flaw, affecting various infrastructures.

The agency emphasized that successful attacks could lead to prolonged disruptions, significant financial losses, and erosion of public trust in digital platforms. NGCERT urged organizations to enhance their cybersecurity measures, including deploying dedicated DDoS mitigation tools and strengthening their infrastructure resilience.

This warning comes amid growing concerns over the vulnerability of Nigeria's digital ecosystem.
