Dangote Refinery IPO Expands Across Africa, Prioritizes Small Nigerian Investors

Dangote Petroleum Refinery is broadening its $1.6 billion share offering across multiple African nations while guaranteeing preference for Nigerians investing…
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is scaling up its initial public offering by extending investor outreach across the African continent. The offering, valued at $1.6 billion or approximately N2.15 trillion, has attracted sufficient demand to warrant an extension of the subscription deadline to October 27, 2026.
The company has now moved beyond Nigeria's borders to court investors in Egypt, Kenya, and Botswana through separate depositary receipt programmes tailored for each market. At the conclusion of its domestic roadshow in Port Harcourt on October 12, Aliko Dangote, president of the conglomerate, made a commitment to set aside priority allocation for retail investors submitting applications of N50,000 or below.
This approach aims to expand ownership of the refinery facility beyond institutional and high-net-worth investors to include ordinary Nigerians. Dangote framed this strategy as returning value to the nation and creating broader economic participation in what he described as a transformational industrial project.
The geographic expansion into Egypt represents a significant step in the pan-African strategy. During an October 15 engagement with the Egyptian Exchange, Dangote Industries executives discussed establishing mechanisms for Egyptian investors to participate.
Similar arrangements have been established or are being explored for Kenyan and Botswanan investors. Botswana has been selected as the primary trading venue for southern African participation in the offering.
The refinery, situated in Lagos, has been positioned as a catalyst for job creation and economic development across Nigeria. By structuring the IPO to accommodate both small domestic investors and larger African institutional players, the company is attempting to balance democratized participation with capital raising objectives.
The extension to late October provides additional time for investors across the targeted markets to submit applications before the offer closes.
