Dangote's Vessel Acquisition Reveals Nigeria's Shipping Gaps

The Dangote Group's initiative to acquire vessels for transporting products across West and Central Africa has revealed Nigeria's shortcomings in developing sufficient indigenous shipping capacity. Ladi Olubowale, an indigenous shipowner and former president of the African Shipowners Association, stated that Dangote's decision is justified due to the inability of Nigerian shipowners to meet cargo demands.

He suggested that Dangote could leverage its substantial cargo base to foster a stronger Nigerian fleet by establishing long-term contracts with qualified indigenous operators. Olubowale emphasized that the issue lies not in Dangote's use of foreign shipping but in the failure of Nigerian operators to provide vessels that meet the necessary specifications.

He called for a focus on aligning Nigeria's cargo with appropriate vessels and financing, rather than merely acquiring ships without a clear commercial market. He noted that Nigeria possesses cargo from sectors like oil and gas, agriculture, and cement, which could support a larger indigenous fleet, especially with the expansion of Dangote's industrial operations.
