NDPC Investigates Remita, Sterling Bank for Data Breach

The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced an investigation into Remita Payment Service Ltd and Sterling Bank concerning an alleged data breach. Babatunde Bamigboy, the Head of Legal Enforcement and Regulation at NDPC, indicated that the investigation will focus on the proper handling of personal data by the involved firms and their suppliers.

The NDPC aims to ensure that suitable technical and organizational measures are in place to protect data subjects. The investigation will examine the nature and extent of the alleged breach, the risks posed to data subjects, and the mitigation measures implemented.

Additionally, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the CEO of the NDPC, has instructed that organizations utilizing digital payment systems must establish the necessary technical and organizational measures as required by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

This investigation is part of a broader initiative to uphold the integrity of the data protection ecosystem in Nigeria.
